History
In the late 19th century, the breed was developed in England from imports obtained in both The Netherlands and Germany.
Care and Health
Coat care requires line brushing on a fairly regular basis and frequent bathing is unnecessary to prevent any bad odor. Keeshonden are generally a very healthy breed. Though congenital health issues are not common, the conditions which have been known to sometimes occur in Keeshonden are hip dysplasia, luxating patellas (trick knee), epilepsy, Cushing's disease, diabetes, primary hyperparathyroidism, and hypothyroidism. Von Willebrand's disease has been known in Keeshonden but is very rare.
