History
The earliest known record of a rat-catching dog is that of "Hatch", whose remains were recovered from the Mary Rose, the flagship of Henry VIII, sunk in 1545 and re-raised in 1982. Hatch is thought to have been a mongrel, and was brought on board to control the rat population.
Care and Health
The Rat Terrier has a short, dense coat that requires very little care other than a weekly once-over with a soft brush. The breed sheds seasonally and will need extra grooming during this time. The Rat Terrier is generally a healthy breed. However, there are a few conditions that they can suffer from, including: Hip dysplasia, Patellar luxation, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, Eye disorders, Cardiac disorders.
