History
The Parson Russell Terrier was first bred in the south of England in the mid-1800s to hunt European red fox, both over and underground, for the sport of kings.
Care and Health
They have two coat types: smooth and broken (rough). Both require regular brushing—the smooth with a thick brush or hound glove, and the rough with a pin or slicker brush. A monthly bath should be sufficient, unless the Parson follows his nature and ends up digging in the mud. The Parson’s nails should be trimmed monthly and his ears checked weekly for debris or excess wax, and cleaned as needed. By far the majority of Parsons are very healthy dogs.
Fun Fact
The Jack Russell Terrier (JRT) is widely recognizable, partly because they’ve appeared on screen in films like “The Thin Man,” a renowned comedy-mystery series from the ’30s and ’40s.
